A New Zealand Roblox hit moves into film development
News update: 28 October 2026. The latest project details were reported on 17 September.
20th Century Studios is developing a live-action film based on 99 Nights in the Forest, a Roblox survival game created by New Zealand team Grandma’s Favourite Games. Josh Cooley is set to write the screenplay, with Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert producing. The game’s creators Alec Kieft, Matthew Hufton and Cameron Angland are also executive producers, according to reports by The Hollywood Reporter and Bloody Disgusting.
In June 2026, NZ On Air reported that the game ranked seventh among Roblox’s most-played titles of all time. Players build a camp, search for four missing children and try to survive 99 nights in a haunted forest.
A production listing last updated on 22 September still marks the film as in development, with no director named and its shoot date listed as TBA. It lists no release date. A writer and producers are attached, but that does not mean filming or a cinema release is scheduled; see the production status.
